2005 BLAST - Myer's Mayhem

By Rich A.

Well, a great time was had by all. Two weeks before the Blast, Lou and myself opened two new sections of the trail with the help from club members on the our last trail building day. It paid off because the comments on the two new sections were great! Not everyone tried the section called Hell's Gate but some did and what a ride! However, most tried out our other section by the waterfall. The nice thing about this trail is we have sections that are very hard (or not so hard with many bypasses.) Sheet metal damage was minor for most except for Bob and his green monster. In the main section of the trail you do not come out with any damage to sheet metal but we test you and your vehicle skills. Damage reports for the first day for 15 jeeps is as follows:

Gene, another "happy victim" of Myer's Mayhem!
  •  1 Jeep broke a tie rod in Hell's gate.
  •  1 Jeep broke down on the way to the trail.
  •  1 Jeep ripped one full side of his Jeep bumper to bumper in Hell's gate (Bob).
  •  My Jeep lost two flares, which I have repaired already, one flare in Hell's gate and the second also in the new section by the waterfall.
  •  4 or more Jeeps laid on there side, all in Hell's gate. Yes, I was one of them but no body damage.
  •  1 Jeep had problems with the drive shaft our trail leader Lou but it got up and running in no time.

The second day we had 10 Jeeps but we also had a very wet trail and covered only 75% of trail because of the conditions.

  •  1 broken axle and hub (Bob.) As you can tell Bob had a great time .
  •   Another Jeep broke a rear axle.
  •  2 Jeeps had flat tires and yes the yellow Rubicon was struck again.
  •  Only three Jeeps laid on there side.

Please note that when we laid them on the side, most of time no one had any damage because it was muddy. Just fun!

Most comments were that the trail is at least a 3+ and some sections 4+ but once again we have by-passes. My 2004 Rubicon has only 10,000 mile on it and I have done this trail many times over and I still have no sheet metal damage because I am very careful. Yes, I bent a tie rod opening up a new area and, yes, I ripped the whole side of one of my tire and, yes, I damaged my front axles. However, Lou and myself made much of this trail easier for everyone so if you are careful you can make it out without body damage. However if you want to push it, you can damage your Jeep.

I want to thank everyone who went on Myer's Mayhem because without everyone's help it would have been two hard days for Lou and myself. Once again if you have been on this trail before the BLAST, I recommend you come out because the trail is two to three hours longer now.
